Interview with Funkin Matt

We recently caught up with unique future house producer Funkin Matt after the release of his latest single ‘White House’.

Hi, welcome to Melodic Nation, where are you from and how did you come up with your artist name?

Hey, thank you for having me! I’m from Norway, living in Oslo. From what I remember there was this DJ called Smokin Jo, and I thought that name sounded dope, so I tried to find out something that could describe me. I love funky stuff, that turned into Funkin, then my name Mats, but that sounds stupid in English, so I changed it to Matt, Funkin Matt!

How would you describe your sound to anyone that hasn’t heard of you before?

Melodic, bassy, techy, funky, house, techno, trance, weird.

Your latest single ‘White House’ has just dropped how long did it take to make the track and how would you describe the sound?

I’m guessing it took like 1 week to make the idea and production, then a couple or maybe like 3 weeks to mix and finetune it. Funny thing is that in the early days I would do tracks in a couple of days. Then I became super specific about everything and started using more and more time on my tracks, but I use a lot of time just experimenting and trying different ideas and seeing if there’s anything I can improve.

This is your third release on Heldeep Records after Aurora & Supercoil, what makes you want to release with Oliver Heldens own imprint?

I think Heldeep is a great fit for my sound, both Oliver and I have been doing variations of the future house sound for a while, I also play a lot of Heldeep stuff in my sets, and he plays my tracks. So it’s a natural fit. Got to mention that the Heldeep guys are great as well!

Any plans for any more releases in 2020?

Hehe, yes! Can’t really say much yet though, but I’m releasing more stuff soon in the near future. A couple of them are already ID’s that people just don’t know are mine yet 😉

Lastly, do you have any positive messages you can share with fans during this difficult time?

Stay in, relax, make music, binge watch all the stuff you missed and think about the glorious raves that will be after the lockdown! Might be a fresh start for the electronic music scene as well, as it has become so saturated with festivals and music. When this is all over I’m going to a dark techno club! Can’t wait!
