Interview with Tom Ferry

On the back of his release with ILY titled ‘Coming After Your Love’ and with a new track set to be released this Friday on Source a sub-label of Spinnin Records. We decided to catch up with him and ask a few questions!

Hi, welcome to Melodic Nation, where are you from and how did you come up with your artist name?

Thanks! I’m from Liverpool which is a very musical city. Not many people know this but Tom Ferry isn’t my real name. My real name is a little too forgettable so I felt I needed to create an image. I picked the name ferry first, just because I thought it was a cool name and my early music was inspired by ferry corsten, and Tom just seemed to fit as a first name.

Your latest track ‘Coming After Your Love’ was a collaboration with ILY, who you worked with before. How did that song come about?

We had a song last year called ‘Remedy’ which performed better than we could have expected. We knew we had to have a follow up and she sent over a vocal demo. ILY is married to a fantastic producer so her vocal demos all came over very well recorded and ready to go. The song came together in a couple of days and flowed naturally. It managed to get signed within a couple of weeks of being finished and it is now on it’s way to half a million Spotify streams.

As has been noted you like collaboratig with the same people, as you have two songs with ILY and a new song with TRU Concept coming soon. What is the reason behind this?

You build relationships and work patterns with people quite easily and find people who are easy to work with. When you make a track with people you like and respect it feels a lot more engaging and fun when you see the rewards.

On Friday, you are dropping a new song with TRU Concept & Dee Ajayi titled ‘Don’t Call Me Baby. Anything you can tell us about this song? Will this be your first release on one of Spinnin Records labels?

Our first song together was a cover of a JLO song from 2001 called ‘Play’. It did really well and we had a group chat on Facebook where we would pitch ideas of new tracks. I can’t remember who suggested remaking Madison Avenues ‘Don’t Call Me Baby’ but it instanly ticked evey box. TRU Concept sent over the foundation of the track and I built upon it and then Dee Ajayi layed down her signature vocal style and it worked perfectly. We were happy when it was signed to Spinnins sub-label Source and have been excited ever since.

You have a very distinctive sound do you think that this is important for upcomming producers?

I think everyone has their own natural sound. Even if I try and sound like someone else, I always sound like me, which can be good but frustrating at times. I guess it is nice to know that people like the sound you naturally have because it means you’ll always hit somebody’s sweet spot. Your sound does evolve though, so sometimes it is just about experimenting until you find a style that your sound compliments well.

Any plans for the rest of 2018?

I don’t plan much really. Unsure if that is a good or bad thing. I’ve got a few fantastic songs that i’m excited for people to hear but many don’t have release dates yet. Working with new people and making new exciting tracks is all I look forward to and I have plenty of that to come. Hopefully you get to hear them soon.
